The fourth print edition of Contemporânea magazine explores and considers the expanded field of moving images within recent artistic praxis. It plots genealogies, contextualizes new developments made possible by the advances of digital and network technology. Cinema, video, and the internet, or more exactly the new media, exert a considerable influence on contemporary art, mirroring the questions of today’s world.

From this perspective, the moving image inescapably redefined our experience of history and time. History — a series of events animated and enhanced by several media — and time as a plastic construct, material and subject to manipulation. It has changed forms, functions, and conventions, introducing new technologies, interfaces, and mostly new perceptions regarding the state of the world and of art. The moving image is used today by artists through film, video, and new media. It is digital and portable, malleable and calculable. Editor: Celina Brás
